ICELAND RING ROAD TOUR
  The ‘Ring Road’ is the doorway to Iceland’s magical and diverse landscape. The road runs all the way around the country and is closely located to some of the country’s most spectacular natural attractions, including the historical Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss and Goðafoss Waterfalls, the Snæfellsness Peninsula as well as the unique Lake Mývatn. 

ITINERARY
11 days / 10 nights

ARRIVAL/REYKJAVÍK

DAY 1

I will personally pick you up and take you to Reykjavík on arrival at Keflavik Airport. Check into your accommodation and relax after the journey. Explore the thriving and dynamic city centre with its diverse range of food, wine and bar and cafe culture or visit one of Iceland’s famous thermal swimming pools.

Spend the night in Reykjavik.

THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

DAY 2

The day will start with a visit to Iceland’s most famous route, the Golden Circle which is the home of waterfalls, hot springs, natural lakes and the first ever European parliament. We will start with the Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk on a path in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The next stop is the famous Geysir area where the original geyser can be found. The famous hot spring is dormant but its neighbour Strokkur will ensure that you don´t leave disappointed as it erupts every few minutes. The stunning Gullfoss waterfall and the Kerið Crater will be our last stop. 

Spend the night in the Hvolsvöllur area.

WATERFALLS AND VOLCANIC BEACHES

DAY 3

Our first stop will be the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where you can actually walk right behind the misty cascade and the 60-metre high Skógafoss waterfall is just a short distance away. The volcanic beaches at Vík are our next destination, where we can view the rock formations Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar. The Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon is the last stop of the day.

GLACIERS AND ICEBERGS

DAY 4

The Skaftafell area is part of the vast Vatnajökull National Park and is renowned for its stunning natural landscape. The area boasts a number of hiking trails, including a short walk to the amazing Svartifoss Waterfall. The trip includes a guided glacier-walking or ice-climbing excursion followed by a visit to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Breiðumerkursandur.

Spend the night near the town Höfn 

FJORDS AND FISHING VILLAGES

DAY 5

Mount Vestrahorn is the first visit of the day followed by a drive along the coastal road of East Iceland which is renowned for its sleepy fishing villages, spectacular fjords and mesmerising rough landscapes. Lake Mývatn is a place of natural wonder, offering the chance to explore the volcanic area of Krafla, the enormous crater at Hverfell, the Námaskarð pass and the Skútustaðir area which is cratered like the moonscape.

Spend the night in the Lake Mývatn area.

LUNAR LANDSCAPES OF LAKE MÝVATN

DAY 6

The day will be spent exploring the wider Lake Mývatn area. We will drive through Jökulsárgljúfur, visiting historical and mystical sights such as the hoof-shaped Ásbyrgi Canyon. We will also see Dettifoss which is considered to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The healing waters of the Mývatn Nature Baths will make a perfect end to the day.

Spend the night in the Lake Mývatn area.

EXPLORE NORTH ICELAND

DAY 7

We will spend the first half of the day around Lake Mývatn and will also visit Goðafoss (known as the waterfall of the Gods) on our way to the second largest town in Iceland, Akureyri where we will visit the beautiful church in the city centre. After a small break in Akureyri, we will head to Skagafjörður via Tröllaskagi where you can enjoy fantastic scenery including cliffs and fjords and stunning mountain scenery. The town of Siglufjörður was once the heart of Iceland’s herring fleet. Your time can also be spent relaxing in Hofsós in a thermal pool before going on to Skagafjörður which is known for its horses.

Spend the night in Northwest Iceland.

JOURNEY TO SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA

DAY 8

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula will be explored today. The journey will include a visit to Hvítárserkur, Vatnsdalshólar and the beautiful Þingeyrarkirkja Church. The Eiríksstaðir Museum (home to the famous Viking Erik the Red) and the hot geothermal pool of Guðrúnarlaug are also popular sites to visit. The idyllic fishing village Stykkishólmur overlooks the Breiðafjörður Bay area and offers a number of photo opportunities. There is a hill overlooking the Súgandisey Harbour which can be accessed by foot and where you can see a dramatic, panoramic view over the town, sea and landscape.

Spend the night on Snæfellsnes Peninsula

SNÆFELLSJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK AND SNÆFELLSJÖKULL GLACIER

DAY 9

The Snæfellsjökull National Park is well known for its unique birdlife, other worldly lava fields and deep valleys. We will explore the Lóndrangar Cliffs and the Dritvík Cove as well as Hellnar and the Arnarstapi Cliffs.  We will visit the Kirkjufell Mountain and walk on the Djúpalónssandur black volcanic beach. From there we will visit the church at Búðir and walk on the yellow beach at Yrti Tangi.

Spend the night in borgarfjörður.

BORGARFJÖRÐUR AND THE WESTERN PART OF ICELAND

DAY 10

Today’s journey back to Reykjavik starts with a visit to the beautiful lava-waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss and the largest hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver. Next we will visit Reykholt where the Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson lived, there we will cisit the hot pool of Snorralaug. From there drive to the capital city with a visit to Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord) that lies between Reykjavík and Borgarfjörður.

Spend the night in Reykjavík.

DEPARTURE

DAY 11

On your way to the airport, your guide will take you to Lake Kleifarvatn and the Krýsuvík area, often referred to as the ‘moon’ by foreign visitors. The area is covered with hot springs and bubbling mud pots.

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa and your final destination. You will have a couple of hours to soak up the mineral-rich waters, surrounded by black lava. This is the perfect ending to your trip, just before you check-in at Keflavik International Airport.
